Crime shifts to hard drugs – traffic light government puts young people in danger

Vienna (OTS) – From April 1st, the possession and cultivation of cannabis will be legal in Germany. This was decided by the traffic light coalition in the German Bundestag on Friday. “Cannabis liberalization in Germany must be a warning signal for Austria. We stand for strong youth protection and a health policy based on science. Legalization only makes it easier to get into drug abuse,” said state party chairman City Councilor Karl Mahrer.
This position is confirmed by many health experts. The international addiction expert Prof. Michael Musalek, who is very recognized in Vienna, also warned against legalization: “Cannabis release opens the door to addiction.”
SPÖ leader Babler spoke out in favor of legalization as early as April 2023. “This is exactly the wrong approach and endangers people. Instead of releasing cannabis, we need a broad-based prevention campaign that highlights the risks of consumption,” continued Mahrer.

Additional burden on security forces

The Vienna People’s Party also points out possible safety problems that could be associated with the legalization of cannabis, such as the risk of driving under the influence of drugs or the relocation of the black market, as the CDU/CSU also fears in Germany. “The chairman of the Association of German Criminal Investigators, Dirk Peglow, told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that this law must be stopped. It is a regulatory monster that will hardly be able to be implemented in practice,” said local councilor Hannes Taborsky, security spokesman for the People’s Party. “In Austria too, there would be considerable legal and therefore operational uncertainty. Police officers checking on child and youth protection in front of schools and sports fields would be the order of the day in the future,” continued Taborsky. All parliamentary parties must now clearly show their colors. All parliamentary parties must now clearly show their colors. “The decision in Germany should make us aware of the safety and health risks that a possible left-wing traffic light coalition poses for Austria. Because drugs always bring suffering, never happiness,” concludes Karl Mahrer.
