VP-Mahrer on homelessness: Security and human dignity must also be a matter of course in public spaces

The current developments in Vienna in the field of homelessness show that help and action must be taken quickly.

Vienna (OTS) In several dramatic incidents with homeless people in Vienna, we recently experienced violence once morest emergency services by homeless people and brutal violence once morest homeless people, like last night. The Vienna People’s Party is therefore currently calling for a new, comprehensive concept for social work. The aim is to protect the personal safety and human dignity of all those affected in Vienna.

The state party chairman of the Vienna People’s Party, City Councilor Karl Mahrer: “The situation in Vienna is by no means as carefree as some opinion leaders like to portray. We are increasingly experiencing unprotected camping in public spaces, also due to a lack of accommodation. This is exactly where we have to start so that all public spaces in Vienna remain safe and humane.”

Nobody should have to spend the night in public spaces

There are numerous possible solutions to get the ever-increasing and diverse problems under control. The Vienna People’s Party puts some of these concrete solutions up for discussion and invites the Vienna city government to discuss and implement a new concept of social work:

1. Checking the number of suitable accommodation places
2. Flexible adaptation to the current situation
3. Actively offering shelter instead of “managing homelessness”
4. More staff in social work
5. Significantly more visible presence of social work in public space and around the clock.

“Vienna must not wait any longer and the problems must no longer be ignored. We, the Vienna People’s Party, will continue to watch and actively identify solutions,” concluded Mahrer.
