Babler-SPÖ opposes the course of the SPÖ Vienna. The Viennese expect clear answers.
Vienna (OTS) – Almost a year ago, Environment and Transport Minister Leonore Gewessler surprisingly rejected the construction of the Vienna Lobau Tunnel – the Vienna SPÖ under Mayor Ludwig only recently confirmed that there might be no other solution than the Lobau Tunnel. On Sunday, Andreas Babler, as federal party chairman of the SPÖ, surprisingly spoke out once morest the transport project and thus went once morest the Viennese party line. “Since the obvious change of course by the federal SPÖ, Michael Ludwig has been at the diving station for two days. Ludwig can no longer remain silent – the Viennese are expecting a clear statement on how the Lobau Tunnel project should continue, according to the SPÖ. That’s why we’re submitting a motion for a resolution on the Lobau tunnel and the north-east bypass to today’s municipal council. We call on the Viennese SPÖ to approve this application and thus close the gap in the regional ring,” said the state party chairman of the Viennese People’s Party, City Councilor Karl Mahrer.
The fact is that a further delay or cancellation of the project will jeopardize the further development of Vienna:
Both in economic terms and in terms of transport policy. Without the Lobau tunnel, heavy traffic will continue to roll through the middle of the city and generate additional CO2 emissions of around 75,000 tons a year. “The city bypass including the Lobau tunnel is a future project that will bring the necessary traffic relief and thus a better quality of life. Above all, the city on the Danube would benefit from a long-needed traffic relief,” said traffic spokeswoman for the Vienna People’s Party, municipal councilor Elisabeth Olischar.
“The city bypass and the Lobau tunnel were included in the development of the Donaustadt district and in the overall development of the city. The traffic project was promised to the population by politicians. Mayor Michael Ludwig must make it clear whether he supports the SPÖ’s new course or fights with us for rapid implementation,” concluded Mahrer and Olischar.
