VP-Hammerer/Olishar ad Gumpendorfer Straße: Concrete plans must be disclosed

Finally provide data and facts – a clear yes to making it more attractive

Vienna (OTS) – “The redesign of Gumpendorfer Straße is a milestone for Mariahilf, but the effects go far beyond the district. We say yes to making Gumpendorfer Straße more attractive. In any case, the partial deficiencies that are an expression of a one-sided transport policy must be remedied,” said ÖVP-Mariahilf chairman Gerhard Hammerer and the planning spokeswoman for the Vienna People’s Party, local councilor Elisabeth Olischar, in an initial reaction to the plans presented yesterday.

Gerhard Hammerer: “We have no alternative to maintaining the accessibility on both sides, which means that line 57A can continue to run on the usual route. In addition, a break would divert private traffic into residential areas, which we reject. The creation of an additional stop on the 57A at Gfrornergasse is positive, so a long-standing demand of the ÖVP Mariahilf and a wish of the residents is finally becoming a reality.”

“However, it is obvious in this case too – as is now common practice in the transport department – that data, facts and figures are unfortunately once again in short supply. And this despite the fact that they actually form the basis for corresponding decisions and measures. A lack of transparency runs like a common thread through the city government’s planning policy,” says Olischar and continues: “The removal of the parking lanes along Gumpendorfer Straße and the closure of the Naschmarkt parking lot will clearly destroy parking space. Where are the alternatives, when will the responsible city councilor present plans for new garage projects?”

To date only rough plans are known. “It is clear, however, that all population groups, the interests of local residents and those involved in the economy must be taken into account. “It is now high time to ensure the greatest possible transparency,” conclude Hammerer and Olischar.
