Vote on decriminalization of abortion – results ►

The Sejm did not pass an amendment to the Penal Code concerning the decriminalization of assistance in abortion.

At the end of June, the parliamentary special committee for considering bills on the right to terminate pregnancy gave a positive opinion on the first of the bills under consideration – the one proposed by the Left, which provided for partial decriminalization, removing the crime of assisting in abortion. The bill repealed paragraph 1 of Article 152 of the Penal Code, which provides for a penalty of up to three years in prison for terminating someone else’s pregnancy.

A vote on this matter was held on July 12.

215 deputies voted for the bill, 218 once morest, two abstained and 35 did not participate in the deliberations.

154 MPs from the Civic Coalition wanted the amendment to be passed. Three MPs from the Civic Coalition did not vote: Roman Giertych, Krzysztof Grabczuk and Waldemar Sługocki.

The amendment did not convince 24 politicians from the Polish People’s Party. Maria Agnieszka Kłopotek, Urszula Pasławska, Magdalena Sroka and Jolanta Gzik-Zięba were in favor.

What regarding Poland 2050 by Szymon Hołownia? 30 people wanted the amendment, two people were absent – ​​Agnieszka Buczyńska and Paweł Zalewski.

All of the Left were in favour, all of the Confederation were once morest – as were those from Law and Justice (except for Monika Pawłowska, who abstained).

PiS and Confederation MPs welcomed the result with thunderous applause.

A test for the coalition
The bill, which would eliminate penalties for supporting women who terminate pregnancies, was described as a test for the coalition. If it did not gain support, then – it seems – laws liberalizing abortion will not do so either.
