Vosges: the couple of bakers sell their bread… in their garage

Behind the large barn door which opens every other day, there is a small sales area with a table serving as a counter and a bread display on the left. At the back, there is a wood-fired oven. Nothing more. There is no window or electronic cash drawer.

“It’s very friendly, there is no barrier between us and the customer,” assures Estelle Fresse. With her husband Gérard, she sells bread and pastries in their house in Dommartin-lès-Remiremont (Vosges). The couple launched this unusual bakery in February 2022 to reduce operating costs. “In the past, we had premises, loans to repay, it was a lot of stress. In addition, we might also have suffered the energy crisis. Whereas here, now, only our mixer runs on electricity. We have much less work, so we sleep much better at night,” smiles the baker, a victim of his success.

“When we started, we only talked regarding it to our neighbors, then word of mouth followed since we are the only ones making bread in the town. But we are at our maximum capacity and we do not want to increase the pace,” he continues. The baguette is sold for 1.05 euros. “It’s an essential service. I pass in front of their house on my way out of work, I stop to get my bread. It’s perfect. And what’s more, it’s excellent, but you shouldn’t say it too much, otherwise there will be too many people,” concludes Nicole, a loyal customer since the beginning.
