Initially, Minister of State Makis Voridis spoke of expansion “in every direction”, in a televised interview, when he was asked to comment on Mrs. Christofilopoulos’ partnership with New Democracy.
When asked by the TV station ANT1, on the program “Morning Greece” regarding the developments with the farmers, he said that “there are open issues which the government is looking at carefully. Bad lies, Thessaly has had a very difficult time. It is not that the issues of Thessaly have ended and unfortunately they are not easy to end.” He stressed that “the speed of agricultural compensation is unprecedented. And I say that because if farmers listen to us and have a memory, they remember what happened four years ago when we had similar compensation issues.”
At this point, following the intervention of a journalist, he emphasized that the crucial point for the question of agricultural compensations was “Ianos”. “Then, during my own ministry, the truth is, the institutional framework also changed, the regulation also changed, the ELGA subsidy method also changed, and we succeeded and gave the compensations very quickly.”
He explained that despite the fact that there was an agreement not to cut the power due to administrative errors in the management of the issue, they cut the power in some cases, doing something that was not right. So that there is no margin, the legislative regulation announced by Mr. Skylakakis will come and therefore this issue will also end.
Larger amounts
Referring to the Prime Minister’s announcement of more money to help farmers, he said that a lot of money has already been given and is going to be given, and farmers should know this, that “the government is really exhausting every fiscal possibility it has to give them support”.
He emphasized that he has a lot of trust in our producers and they are people who appreciate the huge effort made by the government.
“Regardless of what will be the decision of the relevant ministries to reduce the excise tax on oil, I think we should focus on bigger issues that concern our farmers,” said Mr. Voridis.
Regarding the large price difference from the field to the shelf, the Minister of State emphasized that it is an old discussion and various things have been tried in this regard, but “I don’t want to simplify complex issues”.
On tackling accuracy, he said that “while a lot has been done and a lot of effort is being put into an extremely complex and complicated problem, we don’t have a button, a trick, a recipe” to solve everything automatically.
Regarding the checks that are made and the illegal offers, Mr. Voridis pointed out that the difficulty is in identifying the illegal, because when we say costing and you have to define the concept of profiteering, i.e. the unfair excess of profit, things are complex .
“The control needs a lot of cost data, because the other person comes and says to you “what is the profit? Why are you accusing me?” He pointed out at this point that there is a ceiling on the profit, because otherwise we would go to a pricing logic that has huge problems, mainly because it leads either to shortages, or subsequently to excessive profit on its part.
It is of great importance to have a partnership and an alliance with consumers, Mr. Voridis also emphasized and underlined that it is very important for the citizen to change his consumption habits and go buy where he finds it cheaper.
He even assured that “as soon as the companies see that their sales are falling, on the spot, in the week, they immediately adjust the prices”.
“One manifestation of populism is that we think the consumer is absolutely powerless. The answer is that the consumer everywhere, in all countries, is very powerful, and that, of course, if they form consumer behaviors”, he emphasized.
“The consumer has power and if he joins forces with the government’s effort, when there are cheaper products and he chooses these products, he sends a very strong message. We must all be in the same boat in a great effort.”
He added at the same time that “checks are being carried out. They are more intensive than ever before and every effort is being made to intensify more”.
In response to a question regarding the Church’s position on the issue of same-sex marriage, Mr. Voridis said that “the prime minister has taken a stand on this issue. He said that the positions of the Church are respected, almost expected I would say, they are approached from a theological point of view and I don’t think it makes sense to comment anything further.”
He also reiterated that he is not going to participate in the relevant parliamentary process.
In response to a question regarding the so-called right-wing component, Mr. Voridis initially commented that he did not know there was a “right-wing component leadership” and replied:
“We have the great privilege that our prime minister is a synthetic and inclusive prime minister and the part of the so-called “right-wing agenda” that this government has served with great consistency: tax reductions, confidence in entrepreneurship, reduction of illegal immigration, restrictive immigration policy, defense of national sovereignty, strengthening of the country’s defense…
The extraordinary and unique thing that the prime minister is doing and is also an example for Europe politically, because without leaving anything behind and even consistently serving the so-called right-wing agenda, he has on the other hand opened the fan and can adopt harmoniously and policies that have to do with what is called – as long as it exists – “center”.
According to iefimerida, he underlined in closing, that he himself has not made any agreement with the prime minister and that no kind of pressure has been exerted on anyone on any issue. He explained that he himself has explained his position which has two dimensions: one is a substance dimension and the other is a moral dimension.
“At the end of the day and when we go to the European elections, once more the questions will be asked in a clear way. Who do we want to represent us, from which direction, with which identity and what do they defend”, he concluded, predicting that the ND will do very well in the European elections. He underlined, in response to a related question, that there is no identity issue for the ND faction.
