A 28-year-old Austrian is said to have tried to kill a 46-year-old taxi driver in neighboring Switzerland last week. The man, who lives in Feldkirch, is accused of stabbing the 46-year-old in the neck several times with a knife while he was driving, the Vorarlberg police said on Tuesday. Despite the injuries, the taxi driver managed to escape and the 28-year-old fled back to Vorarlberg, where he was arrested two days later.

The suspect ordered a taxi last Tuesday around 9 p.m. to drive to Buchs in the canton of St. Gallen. In the Buchs industrial area, a discussion broke out between him and the taxi driver, which resulted in the stabbing. The 46-year-old managed to get the attention of a bus driver after escaping from the taxi. He was taken to St. Gallen Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Meanwhile, the 28-year-old continued driving in the taxi. In Buchs he caused a traffic accident and in Ruggell (Liechtenstein) he resisted being stopped. Back in Feldkirch, the man hit a parked vehicle before parking the taxi. Two days later, on Thursday, the 28-year-old was arrested by the Cobra task force and taken to the Feldkirch prison. The man’s motive for his stabbing has not yet been determined, it said.

Due to the suspect’s Austrian citizenship, the Feldkirch public prosecutor’s office is conducting the criminal proceedings in close cooperation with the St. Gallen public prosecutor’s office. The criminal investigations are also divided between the Vorarlberg State Criminal Police Office, the Feldkirch police and the St. Gallen cantonal police.
