Vorarlberg: Plans for the expansion of a limestone quarry presented

Vorarlberg, Bregenz (OTS)

  • The expansion of an existing limestone quarry is planned in the municipality of Schnepfau in the Bregenzerwald.
  • The project applicants ROS.-Rock Steinbruch presented the first planning steps to the Vorarlberg state government as the responsible authority.
  • The request for preliminary proceedings will follow in the next two weeks.

The Society ROS.—Rock Quarry, ROS. stands for Gebrüder Rüf – Oberhauser & Schedler, will apply for an extension of the existing limestone quarrying in the municipality of Schnepfau. The first plans together with a project outline and schedule were presented to the Vorarlberg state government on Friday. As before, a Quintner limestone is to be mined in the quarry; a rock of special quality, which is used nationwide and in neighboring countries in structural and civil engineering and in flood and torrent protection structures. These play an important role, especially in many forest communities on the Bregenzerache. The rock will continue to be used as a raw material and aggregate for the Au and Andelsbuch gravel works and the BWB concrete works in Bregenzerwald.

“These plans and the forthcoming application are the first step for a comprehensive EIA, i.e. environmental impact assessment procedure, which will follow in the coming year. All effects on people and animals, soil, water and air as well as landscape and climate should be checked and appropriate specifications formulated,” say the managing directors Michael Pircher and Bruno Rüf. “As project applicants, we would like to emphasize that we are submitting the application for good reasons. It is important for all of us to have limestone that is locally close and available, which we might also supply at short notice in emergencies, i.e. situations of special public interest, which we have already done in the past. Truck traffic will not increase as a result of the planned expansion, as no increase in the mining intensity is planned; and the particularly humid climate in the Bregenzerwald enables good renaturation of the quarrying site, which is then filled with excavated material and subsequently grows over once more with plants and mosses. From an environmental perspective, expanding an existing mining project makes much more sense than a completely new one.”

Attorney Wolfram Schachinger, who represents ROS.-Rock Steinbruch in the proceedings: “We made a conscious decision to initiate an EIA procedure and not to circumvent this through piecemeal submissions, so that the overall effects, including truck traffic, on the region must be assessed. The project applicant does not shy away from participating in the following procedure, all interests should be taken into account from the start.”

Detailed background.

Before initiating an EIA procedure, the project applicant can voluntarily submit an application for a preliminary procedure. The project is explained in more detail with the competent authority, here the Vorarlberg state government, in order to incorporate suggestions for improvement.
