The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen and the High Representative Josep Borrell in their joint statement on Alexei Navalny speak of a “freedom fighter”.
“He was slowly murdered by President Putin and his regime, who fear nothing more than dissent from their own people,” they underline.
It is also emphasized that every effort will be made to hold the Russian political leadership and authorities accountable.
“We demand from the Russian authorities to prove all the facts regarding Navalny’s death. Russia must immediately release all other political prisoners,” Joseph Borrell and Ursula von der Leyen point out.
As they say, “Alexei Navalny displayed incredible courage and determination throughout his life. He bravely returned to Russia following a heinous assassination attempt. He gave hope to democrats and civil society in Russia, which is why so many people from all over the country joined his actions and listened to his messages.”
