Volvo will launch on June 7 the EX30, a small electric utility crossover

Volvo is expected to reveal the name of its battery electric crossover utility vehicle on June 7.

The EX30 will be the smallest Volvo since the 1980s, when it built the Volvo 480 hatchback, a small Swedish hatchback that was never imported to America.

While there are many automakers competing in the premium market, it’s the lower-end luxury models that tend to be the most popular, such as the Lexus, Genesis, or Acura.

Sure, that’s not the case with Volvo, where the XC40 ranks third with 18,558 units behind second-place XC90 with 34,101 units and first-place XC60 with 36,181 units sold last year. Only the XC40 and C40 were the least popular.

Both the XC40 and C40 come with the name Recharge, Volvo’s name for rechargeable battery-electric vehicles, so the new model should help strengthen, not sell, Volvo’s growing EV portfolio.

Unlike the XC40, which is offered as a hybrid, the XC30 will be offered solely as a battery-electric crossover, thus competing with the cheaper Tesla. (Of course, competing is a saying).

The XC30’s name suggests it’s a premium battery-electric vehicle that might sell in droves, but keep in mind that its corporate cousin, the battery-electric Polestar 2, sold just 718 models last year, so a flop wouldn’t be surprising. .

So it is unlikely to expect to see an avalanche of XC30, since minority markets such as Hispanic, African American or Oriental, who might access these models, are not the best friends of Volvos.

It is expected that the EX30 may not be the only pure EV in Volvo’s lineup by 2024.

Volvo is owned by the Chinese conglomerate Geely, so it expects this new little model to be built in China.
