Volvo Electric SUV Launch Delayed Due to LiDAR Software Complexity: EX90 Arrival Postponed by 5-6 Months

Volvo’s EX90 electric SUV won’t be launched quite when the automaker originally planned. The company indicates that it postpones the introduction of the model on the market for five to six months.

The reason ? Jim Rowan, CEO of Volvo, points to “the complexity of the software code” of the vehicle’s LiDAR system, which integrates the driver assistance and vehicle safety systems. The EX90 is the first Volvo model to integrate the LiDAR system, which will come as standard and not as an option, unlike other models on the market, including the Polestar 3.

Jim Rowan confirmed the delay during the company’s July 20 earnings conference call, as reported by Automotive News. He then explained that “we write a lot of the software ourselves. We wanted to be sure that the first time we integrate lidar into our security system, it will work as it should. The postponement gives Volvo engineers time to carry out all necessary checks and tests.

The postponement means customers won’t receive the EX90 they ordered until the third quarter of 2024. The electric vehicle will be built at Volvo’s Ridgeville, South Carolina plant, but instead of starting before the end of the year as planned, production of the EV will likely start in 2024.
