Despite the hot weather at the moment, the heat wave plan is not activated in Indre because the department is not placed on heat wave orange vigilance. This does not prevent the municipal social action center of Châteauroux from checking that the frail elderly are well. Every Wednesday followingnoon, volunteers from the office for retired people, in conjunction with the CCAS, make calls as part of the “desire to talk” device which has existed for four years and which was launched following a heat wave in the summer of 2019.
This Wednesday, the heat was at the heart of the discussions between the volunteers and the fifteen elderly people on the phone. “We do a little health report, we ask them how they are, if they close the shutters. They are advised to drink and stay cool“, details Jocelyne, one of the volunteers.
“We’re bored so it’s fun“, says a 94-year-old woman. Typically, volunteers spend half an hour on the phone with seniors.
After the calls, a debriefing is organized with the office for retired people. “We bring up things that we have been able to detect in relation to heat or something else“, explains Jocelyn.
656 people called this summer as part of the heat wave plan
When the heat wave plan was triggered, from August 19 to 21, the CCAS of Châteauroux has activated its file of vulnerable people. 656 people were contacted and four home visits were organized for unreachable people. This number of 656 people is relatively stable from one year to the next.
