The opposition party Voluntad Popular (VP) announced on July 18 the arrest of Freddy Cimino, a member of the party’s regional team in Miranda state.

Adriana Pichardo, political coordinator of the organization, said that neighbors in the La Macarena sector, in Los Teques (Miranda), informed her that, on Wednesday night, Cimino’s car was surrounded by six state security officials dressed in black, for at least 15 minutes.

“No one was able to see the moment of the arrest, but it is undoubtedly an arbitrary arrest,” Pichardo said.

Earlier, the orange party had reported the disappearance of Freddy Cimino, who works as a regional leader of a political organization in the state of Miranda.

The party said Cimino was last heard from on July 17, when he was last seen around 9:50 p.m. near the main avenue of Macarena Sur (Los Teques). He was in his silver Twingo vehicle and was wearing a blue and white checkered shirt.

“He has been searched for in health centers, transit points and other places in Los Teques, but he remains missing,” VP highlighted through its social networks. Cimino’s “disappearance” occurs amid a growing number of arrests of political leaders linked to the Venezuelan opposition.

Romero said that at least 102 of the arrests were related to the team of leader María Corina Machado or were collaborators or opposition leaders in the country’s interior.

The lawyer indicated that of the 301 political prisoners, 93 have not completed their judicial processes and are awaiting possible preventive measures of freedom. Romero clarified that, of the total number of political prisoners in the country, there are currently 152 military personnel and 149 civilians. Of this number, 27 are women and 274 are men.

The NGO Laboratorio de Paz also documented more than 70 arrests during the campaign for the July 28 elections.

The NGO Laboratorio de Paz (Laboratory for Peace) has recorded a total of 71 people arrested in an “arbitrary” manner during the first 10 days of the electoral campaign ahead of the presidential elections that will take place on July 28 in Venezuela.

According to the NGO’s report, 66 men and 5 women were arrested between July 4 and 14, most of them in Táchira state.

Of the total, 48 of the people arrested were linked to the provision of goods and services for the campaign of the candidate of the main opposition coalition, the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), Edmundo González Urrutia, accompanied at campaign events by the leader María Corina Machado.

The NGO, which also collects data from other organisations such as Foro Penal, Fundehullan and Espacio Público, recorded 26 cases of harassment, at least 11 roadblocks to prevent events from taking place, 21 cases of reprisals for providing goods and services to candidates and 13 cases of asset retention.

The report by the Peace Laboratory also mentions that there were 20 cases of violations of freedom of expression and information and four website blockages during the first 10 days of the campaign, which will end on July 25, as established by the National Electoral Council (CNE).
