Valenciana Cycle Race to Proceed Despite Devastating Floods
The 2025 Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana will go ahead as planned, despite the devastating floods that ravaged the region last month, claiming more than 200 lives and impacting hundreds of thousands of others.
Organizers confirmed that the race will proceed from February 5th to 9th, asserting that the event will be held in honour of the community’s resilience. They acknowledge This year’s edition will be particularly special and called upon supporters to come together for the annual cycling showcase.
“We want to confirm that the 76th Edition of our race is not in danger,” race organizers stated in a social media announcement. “As we announced months ago, the VCV 2025 will take place from February 5th to 9th, and we hope to count on your support in a very special edition due to the recent events in the Community of Valencia.”
A Race Steeped in History
The Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana holds a significant place on the cycling calendar, often acted as a strong indicator of fitness for some of the world’s leading general classification riders.
Its challenge has been a springboard for riders to chart their form ahead of tougher races, attracting UCI WorldTour teams and known for thrilling competition.
In 2024, American rider Brandon McNulty secured an early-season victory, showcasing remarkable strength by claiming a solo win on stage four, conquering the challenging ascent of La Vall d’Ebo.
This year’s race is expected to be particularly poignant.
Overcoming the Impact of the Flood
Over 12 inches of rain lashed the region on October 29th, wreaking havoc on buildings, roads, and other crucial infrastructure.
Race organizers revealed that their warehouses retaining essentials for the cycling event suffered severe damage from the floods, adding another layer of complexity to their preparations.
“The vast majority of the material we use for the organization of the VCV has been rendered useless. In addition, a significant portion of our team resides in the affected area, and many have suffered directly from this tragedy, facing significant material and human losses,” the statement highlighted, stressing the nuances of this year’s event.
With much of the course already set up before the floods, modifications may be needed due to the damage caused.
Organizers are working with local authorities to evaluate the viability of preplanned routes.
“Some of the routes planned for this VCV 2025 pass through areas affected by the tragedy. We are working with authorities to study these routes and, if necessary, we will plan modification to ensure the proper celebration of the VCV 2025,” they stated.
The future of the women’s Setmana Ciclista Volta Femenina de la Comunitat Valenciana, scheduled for February 13-16, organized by a separate entity, remains unconfirmed.
