L’Ukraine “will never accept” a peace agreement that would be “imposed” by the great powers, said Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday, September 25, at the podium of the UN General Assembly in New York, denouncing “colonial wars and the plots of the great powers to the detriment of the small ones.”

During his speech, Volodymyr Zelensky also accused his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, of preparing attacks on nuclear sites in Ukraine: “I have recently received further alarming information from our intelligence services. Putin now appears to be planning attacks on our nuclear facilities and their infrastructure.”

In front of numerous leaders of the United Nations, the Ukrainian president sought to secure the continued support of the international community, which has its eyes fixed on fears of a conflagration in the Middle East. Meanwhile, Russia continues its daily bombings in Ukraine, with a strike killing at least one person and wounding 15 on Wednesday in Kramatorsk, a large city in eastern Ukraine, the governor of the Donetsk region said.

The Importance of International Support for Ukraine

President Zelensky’s address at the UN is not just a plea for immediate assistance; it signifies the broader implications of global political dynamics where smaller nations grapple with the ambitions of larger powers. As he highlighted, Ukraine’s sovereignty is fundamental to maintaining international law and order.

Key Messages from Zelensky’s Speech

  • Condemnation of colonial wars and power imposition on smaller nations.
  • Accusations against Russia for potential nuclear attacks.
  • Call for unwavering international solidarity against aggression.

The Nuclear Threat: What’s at Stake?

Zelensky’s mention of nuclear infrastructure is particularly alarming given the previous history of nuclear disasters. Any potential attack on a nuclear facility could have catastrophic implications—not just for Ukraine but for Europe and beyond. With this in mind, the international community must remain vigilant and proactive in preventing escalation.
