Golden Eagles Fall to Creighton in BIG EAST Title Match

Omaha, NE — The Marquette University women’s volleyball team fell to No. 5 Creighton 25-14, 25-16, 25-19 in the BIG EAST Conference Championship presented by Jeep on Saturday at D.J. Sokol Arena. Senior Aubrey Hamilton led the Golden Eagles with a match-high 18 kills.

Hamilton and setter Yadhira Anchante were named to the All-Tournament team after their strong performances throughout the week. Hamilton averaged an impressive 6.00 kills per set during the tournament, hitting .360 over the two matches and contributing 14 digs and two blocks. Anchante also had a remarkable weekend, posting 70 assists (11.67 per set), along with 2.83 digs per set and four total blocks.

Despite their individual success, the Golden Eagles struggled offensively on Saturday, hitting just .099 compared to Creighton’s .295 mark.

Creighton’s setter Kendra Wait earned Most Valuable Player honors after recording 35 assists, 11 digs, and two blocks in the championship match. Outside hitters Ava Martin and Norah Sis also received All-Tournament selections, both registering 10 kills.

This marked the ninth time Marquette has advanced to the BIG EAST title match, but the Golden Eagles’ search for their second championship title.

The Bluejays have dominated the conference this season, dropping just three sets in 20 matches against BIG EAST opponents. Marquette and DePaul account for two of those lost sets.

Overall, Marquette is now 14-16 all-time in Big East Championship history. Their only title win came in 2013, a victory over Creighton at the very same venue.

All- Tournament Resilience

This move marks a consistent pattern for Marquette in the conference championship game, with the Golden Eagles holding a 1-8 record in title match appearances.

Marquette’s success against Creighton is limited, though Hamilton and ctlreza.

In a rematch of the 2022 final, Hamilton and senior libero Carly Skrabak earned All-Tournament team honors, as Marquette claimed the fourth set 33-31.

Looking Ahead: NCAA Familiar Territory

The NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Selection Show airs live on ESPNU on Sunday at 5 pm.

Unfortunately, the final also marked a familiar defeat for the Golden Eagles, pushing them to a 7-30 record in all-time against Creighton.

Nevertheless, Marquette remains confident: the team is aiming for its 13th NCAA tournament berth since 2011.
