Volkswagen’s Self-Driving VW ID Buzz AD: A Game-Changer for Commercial Autonomous Transportation in Europe and North America

2023-07-14 07:00:00

Volkswagen is working hard on the self-driving VW ID Buzz AD (Autonomous Driving) and has recently presented a corresponding vehicle for the first time to decision-makers from politics, authorities and business in Germany. At the same time, a test program has started in Austin, Texas. The development of AD vehicles is aimed at commercial use in metropolitan areas in Europe and North America, both for driving and transport services.

The ID Buzz AD offers high-volume technology and is equipped with a self-driving system from technology company Mobileye. The growing test fleet collects data on kilometers driven in a variety of driving scenarios. Each of the vehicles – defined as Level 4 in the American SAE standard for automated driving – has cameras, radar and lidar technology. All vehicles will be manned by safety drivers at all times during the test phase. The large-capacity model offers space for four passengers. In Germany, the first use is planned in the driving service of the group subsidiary Moia. In the USA, VW plans to use it with external partner companies in the mobility and transport sector. (aum)
