A harmless gesture that can be repeated several times a day, the opening of porte can sometimes be dangerous if you are not careful. Especially towards motorcyclists and cyclists who arrive at full speed near your vehicle. It is for this reason that certain manufacturers have set about developing systems to avoid accidents at the time ofdoors openning by the passengers of a car, like Volkswagen who invented a door opening system safe which makes it possible to avoid dangerous situations when exiting the vehicle in an urban environment.

New support system of the German manufacturer warns the driver and passengers that road users approach the stationary vehicle from behind. Thus, within the limits of the system, the assistant can detect cyclists who are among the most vulnerable road users. In addition to the driver’s side and front passenger’s side doors, the secure opening system also protects the rear doors. The new ID.7the new Passat and the new Tiguan are equipped as standard with this assistance system. On the Golfl’ID.4 and theID.5, the system is available as an option, in a technically specific form. The new ID.7 is equipped with the latest evolution of the secure door opening system. This system scans the area behind the stationary vehicle using two rear radar sensors (left and right at the bumper) and informs passengers of a danger even before a handle is activated. door. If a road user approaches, an LED automatically lights up in the exterior mirror as a first level of warning. If one of the door opening devices is nevertheless actuated, opening of the door is prevented for a short time. If the door is opened, a warning signal sounds. In addition, the assistance system remains active for three minutes after the car is parked, the engine is turned off and the on-board power is cut off, to cover the exit of the vehicle for all passengers.

The secure door opening system of the new Passat and the new Tiguan works in the same way as that of the ID.7: the system lights the LED of the relevant exterior mirror to inform the vehicle occupants that a road user the road approaches from behind, even before the door handle is pulled. If a door handle is nevertheless operated, the acoustic warning sounds via a loudspeaker in the door. As both of these models are equipped with mechanical locks, the additional door opening delay function of the ID.7 is not available. The time delay system works with the electrical interlocks.

The secure door opening system is available as an option on the ID.4 and ID.5 models. It works practically the same as on the ID.7. The only exception is that the LED light in the exterior mirror is only activated in the event of danger when passengers operate one of the door handles. The other warning levels, the acoustic signal in the door concerned and the electronic opening delay are identical to those of the ID.7.

The current Golf was the first Volkswagen model to be equipped with the secure door opening system. The system works in the same way as on the ID.4 and ID.5 models. Like the Passat and Tiguan models built on the MQB modular transverse platform, the Golf is equipped with a mechanical door lock, which means that the additional function of delay on opening the doors is not available.
