On Wednesday, around 7:30 p.m., an individual completely lost his mind at the wheel of his powerful Volkswagen at Square Léopold in Namur. The latter was initially parked there with his vehicle. After several heated exchanges with a woman and other people, he got into his car and drove at high speed towards the rue de Fer. “And then he came back to the scene by going up this same street in the wrong direction!” indicate witnesses of the scene.
He stepped on the accelerator
The man returned to the charge and got out of his vehicle. Words were exchanged once more and the tension rose a notch.
Again at the wheel of his car, rather than going up Rue Borgnet towards the roundregarding, he turned to the right and drove in the opposite direction on Avenue de la Gare, which is currently under construction. A few meters further, he climbed on the curb opposite the entrance to the C&A (see photo). The man then turned right, rolled in front of the benches in Square Léopold before pressing the accelerator towards the square where there were many people and vehicles. The video did not make it possible to verify whether he had actually hit pedestrians but he was, on the other hand, on the verge of violently hitting a woman. In his mad dash, he crashed into two vehicles including a Volkswagen which was still on the scene this Thursday followingnoon. He finally stopped once morest a curb. According to the Namur public prosecutor’s office, several people were injured in the legs. “I saw three people get into an ambulance, adds a witness. There is no death, it is a miracle.”

While the driver was stationary, several people tried to get him out of his vehicle. The latter, equipped with pieces of wood and iron bars that they recovered on the spot, hit both the car and its owner through the window. The latter managed to flee towards the rue de Fer while being chased by several people.
A large Namur police force landed on the scene fifteen minutes later. The prosecution, for its part, indicated Thursday that the driver and other individuals were deprived of their liberty. They were to be heard this Thursday by an examining magistrate. Contacted later in the day to shed new light on the facts, the Namur prosecutor’s office did not respond to our calls.
A blurry context
According to several witnesses, it was a settling of accounts. Some speak of an argument between delivery men, others of former colleagues in a fast food restaurant. Why? A woman would be at the heart of the scuffles. “This is not the first time that these people have argued in Leopold Square”, we are told. In the neighborhood, many are those who deplore this new act of violence near the station and Square Léopold.
