Volkswagen ID.2 GTI: The Future of Electric City Cars Unveiled at Munich Motor Show

It’s not really a surprise because it was announced, half-word, from the presentation of the ID.2all prototype, last March. The GTI version of the crisp electric city car will double the show at the Munich Motor Show.

A logical and above all legitimate way to bring back to the fore a second time the one that already embodies the revival of the brand.

Are you more of a gray GTI or a red GTI?

To echo the Volkswagen Golf I GTI, unveiled in the fall of 1975 at the IAA show in Frankfurt, two style models – unfortunately without a passenger compartment – will sit prominently on the Volkswagen stand at the IAA in Munich, which will open its doors to the public from September 5 to 10, 2023. One gray, like the very first copy of the legendary ancestor , the other red, just like the shade that made the bombinette into legend. A color that also covers the floor of the passenger compartment, as was the case in the 1980s on board the Peugeot 205 GTI.

A gleaming and contrasting carpet which makes it possible to visually lighten much darker furniture. The brand’s first electric GTI, it also eclipses the GTX label which today characterizes the sports ID.4 and ID.5 in the range. Volkswagen indicates that this label will continue on the most high-end models: ID 4, 5, 6 and 7 while GTI will be the prerogative of ID 1, 2 and 3.

A bit of GTI Pirelli and M3 E36…

It is the Hungarian designer, Tibor Juhasz, who previously worked at Renault, notably on the Clio 4, including its GT and RS versions, as well as the Alpine Vision GranTurismo concept, which exacerbated the lines of the ID.2 all to transform it into an ID .GTI. The latter is distinguished by its rims with a larger diameter, 20 inches ( once morest 18 inches for the ID.2 all) coated with 245/35 tires whose design evokes those of the Volkswagen Golf 1 Pirelli. Its hollow black rocker panels, in the spirit of those of the BMW M3 E36, refine its lines.

Just like, just above, the striated decorative patterns, a good quality gimmick to visually erase the body height, increased because of the batteries housed in the floor. Thus, in profile, the ID. GTI is more balanced than the ID.2. Back too, since the same recipe is used at the bottom of the tailgate. At its top, an attached spoiler, lacquered in black, subtly pays homage to the dark tint which enlarged the rear window of the Golf Mk1 GTI. A very fashionable device in the 1980s, the restyled Citroën Visa bears witness to this.

A concept that already announces an SUV?

The front bumper of the Volkswagen ID. GTI takes out the heavy artillery with an insert in the lower part and an air intake characterized by a grid in a hexagonal pattern. A honeycomb structure that is an integral part of the DNA of the Golf GTI. In detail, the very manly outline of the bottom of the grille cuts out slots on the aluminum slat that would not look out of place on the protective skid at the front of an SUV. From there to imagine that one day the future Volkswagen ID.2 comes in an adventurer version? A clue that already takes us to the next step that of a probable Volkswagen ID.2X.

More powerful than the Alpine A290?

This friendly sportswoman will have the mission, once she has reached the milestone of the series, by 2025, to block the road to the Alpine A290, the radical version of the electric Renault 5. Cautious, for the moment, Volkswagen is careful not to put forward any value for the power of its future racing car. The French should total around 220 horsepower under its hood, taking over the fastest electric machine from its big sister Renault Mégane E-Tech Electrique.

The German will be able to capitalize on the electric motor that will drive its technical cousin, the future Cupra Raval. And for the record, the Volkswagen ID.2 all had set the bar very high announcing 226 hp. The France Germany match between the two nostalgic bombinettes is already eagerly awaited.
