After developing hits such as The Descent and The Descent 2, the two decided to part ways, with Mike Colas keeping Parallax and renaming it to Volition. In August 2000, the studio was acquired by THQ Corporation, which led to the creation of the Red Faction and Saints Row franchises. After THQ declared bankruptcy in 2012, Koch Media bought Volition, becoming part of the Deep Silver division. In 2018, Koch Media was acquired by THQ Nordic, along with several other game development companies which became a separate entity called THQ Nordic AB. This entity was renamed the Embracer Group to avoid confusion with THQ Nordic GmbH. In November 2022, Embracer Group transferred Volition to Gearbox Software, a video game publisher known for the Borderlands franchise. The Saints Row developer took to Twitter, and shared a long, heartfelt farewell message in an image that also features the company’s logo. The letter began by reflecting on the studio’s 30-year history while also noting how some games have become bigger than the people or company that made them. In the letter, Volition also acknowledged the contribution and hard work of the people who have been working at the studio for the past 30 years. She attributed the success of her games to the team of artists, creators, designers and storytellers who helped the studio come up with amazing new concepts. The team has been responsible for numerous commercial hits, from Red Faction: Guerrilla to Saints Row: The Third, which has sold over 5 million copies worldwide. At the end of the letter, Volition expressed its gratitude to the gaming community.
