Volcano in Oita Raised to eruption alert level 2 (regulation around the crater) of Mt. Tsurumi and Mt. Garandake –Weathernews

Garandake is a volcano with a crater in Yufu City, west of Beppu City, and fumarolic activity is active on a daily basis. In the past, there are records of eruptions in 771 and 867 AD. It created a mud volcano in 1995 and spewed mud, but the Japan Meteorological Agency does not treat it as an eruption.

In addition, at Mt. Tsurumi in Beppu City, which is located on the south side of Mt. Garandake, some changes in volcanic activity have been observed, such as the occasional earthquakes with epicenters in shallow areas near the mountain body following 2020.

For Tsurumidake and Garadake, the eruption forecast of the Japan Meteorological Agency was started in December 2007, and the eruption alert level was introduced in July 2016, but this time it will be the first level increase. At eruption alert level 2, Tsukahara Onsen (Yufu City) near the Garandake crater is supposed to evacuate, and evacuation orders may be issued in the future.
