SAN JOSÉ (AP) — The Rincón de la Vieja volcano in Costa Rica erupted Thursday followingnoon with a column of gases, ash and water that rose to more than 3,000 meters in height, reported the National Commission for Risk Prevention and Emergency care.
Rincón de la Vieja is inside the national park of the same name, located in the province of Guanacaste, 170 kilometers northwest of San José, the country’s capital. It is frequently visited by local and foreign tourists.
The eruption occurred at 2:35 p.m. (local time) with a column of water vapor, gases, and ash, which forced the declaration of alerts in the surrounding communities, especially due to the fall of volcanic material into the rivers. which might cause avalanches.
“As we have been reporting, this month the volcano has been in constant eruption. In the case of this last eruption, there was an expulsion of material from the bottom of the main lake that will generate hot mud currents (lahars) towards the channels of the northern part,” the Commission indicated in a statement.
After the event, the populations near the Pénjamo, Azufrada and Azul rivers, all in the northern part of the volcano, are on alert and must maintain vigilance over the behavior of these tributaries for the next few hours.
“We remind the population that a volcano can erupt at any time, therefore, we must abide by the recommendations and not climb illegally,” the Commission added.
The Rincón de la Vieja Volcano is one of the most active in recent years in Costa Rica, with large periodic eruptions of incandescent material, gases and ash.
