A revolutionary imaging chip inspired by Superman’s X-ray vision could soon be found in smartphones, offering the ability to see through walls or packaging. The chip, which has no lenses or optics, detects signals reflected off objects to create images. The chip’s pixels, measuring 0.5 mm, are capable of capturing fine details. Ultimately, this innovation could have medical applications, particularly for non-invasive examinations.

In their 2022 paper, the researchers also discussed integrating the system into vehicles to improve navigation in low-visibility conditions. However, privacy concerns led the team to focus on short-range uses, limiting the risk of malicious use.
