Voice of Iraq | “Biden may stay.” The US President receives “encouraging messages.”

US President, Joe Biden
US President Joe Biden was able to catch his breath recently, following opinion polls showed that his popularity had improved significantly among the Democrats, even if the majority did not want him to run once more for the presidential elections in the year 2024.

According to the American newspaper “The Washington Post”, Biden made a number of gains in the past year, following he succeeded in reaching agreements on thorny files in the United States such as infrastructure, climate and arms restrictions.

Biden came out with the least losses from the mid-term congressional elections last November, while expectations were that the Democrats would suffer a heavy loss in the House of Representatives and the Senate, given Americans’ discontent with the inflation that followed the Corona epidemic and the Ukraine war.

The Republicans won a limited majority in the House of Representatives, while the Democrats increased their grip on the Senate, which means less legislative troubles for President Biden in the remainder of the presidential term.

Despite this performance, only 47 percent of Democrats agree that Biden will run once more for the presidential elections, looking forward to a new personality to run in the competition.

And last November and December, the number of supporters of Biden’s candidacy once more was in the range of 40 percent, but the percentage was less than that in September of 2022.

Biden’s fortunes

Although the Democrats are not enthusiastic regarding Biden’s candidacy once more, there are strong expectations that he will succeed in running on behalf of the party, given that there are no strong competitors for him on the scene.

Biden faces the obstacle of age, because he has reached eighty, and there is controversy regarding his health, even if he had confirmed earlier that he was able to perform his required duties in the White House.

And if Biden runs on behalf of the Democratic Party, in November 2024, he will be eighty-two years old, while in 2021 he was the oldest president of the United States when he took the oath.

One of the factors that enhances Biden’s favor is that the senior Democratic elected at the present time do not want to crowd out and compete with Biden, so as not to anger him.

As for Biden’s strongest internal opponents, such as Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Bernie Sanders of Vermont, they seem to be satisfied with his policy, which is closer to the left.

Even if Biden faces Democratic competitors, he is likely to win, especially since he proposed changes to the primaries schedule, according to a formula that enhances his chances.

Biden’s proposals regarding the timing of the primaries enhance the influence of voters in states such as Michigan, Georgia and South Carolina, and this voter bloc is important, because it includes a large number of people of African descent who are known to support Biden.

Take advantage of Trump’s weakness

It is possible that Americans will find themselves in the 2024 elections, facing the same candidates who ran for the White House in 2020, namely, Democrat Biden and former Republican President Donald Trump.

But Trump is no longer as strong as he was, as the Republicans dispersed around him, and his word was no longer heard among the conservative party as it was before.

In the midterm elections, for example, it was noted that a number of candidates who supported Trump in the elections suffered losses, while they were betting that he would enhance their chances.

Recently, Trump did not succeed in convincing a number of Republican Party representatives to vote for Kevin McCarthy to assume the presidency of the House of Representatives, although they were among his most loyal supporters earlier.

Moreover, Trump finds himself surrounded by judicial troubles and heavy files. Earlier in 2022, FBI agents stormed Trump’s luxurious home in Florida in order to search for documents included in the category of confidentiality, which he was not allowed to take outside official facilities.

Trump also drags behind him the incident of January 6, 2021, when he spoke among his supporters and “incited” them, so they went to the Congressional building and stormed it in riots that caused a number of deaths, while they were seeking to obstruct the ratification of Biden’s election as president.

And last December, a poll conducted by Quinnipiac University in Connecticut revealed that Trump’s level of support among American voters had fallen to its lowest level since 2015.

The figures showed that only 31 percent of those registered for elections in the United States view Trump positively, while 59 percent express their opposition to him.

In July 2022, Trump had a higher popularity rating of 37 percent, but the US president has always questioned opinion polls and accused them of misleading, as he has repeatedly said regarding traditional media.
