Voice of Iraq | Al-Halbousi, President of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union

The Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union assigned the Speaker of the Iraqi Council of Representatives, Muhammad al-Halbousi, to head the union, starting from the ninth of January.

And a statement issued by the Media Office of the Iraqi Parliament, today, Sunday (January 15, 2023), stated that “Iraq headed the Arab Parliamentary Union, as the presidency of the Union moved to Iraq.”

He added, “The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Muhammad al-Halbousi, has been assigned as president of the federation, as of the ninth of January.”

The media office indicated that Baghdad “will host, from February 23 to February 26, the work of the thirty-fourth conference of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union and the accompanying committees, with the participation of the heads of councils and parliaments of the Arab member states of the Union,” in addition to many parliamentary organizations and institutions that have “observer status in the Union.” .

Al-Halbousi had said, in a statement issued by the presidency of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union, on January 10, 2023, with regard to Sudan, that the union “welcomes the launch of the second and final phase of the political process in the Republic of Sudan.”

The federation expressed its “confidence in the Sudanese people to resume their development path and embark on a new phase in building their developed country, which is capable of overcoming adversities and calamities.”

The Arab Parliamentary Union was established in June 1974. It is an Arab parliamentary organization consisting of divisions representing Arab parliaments and councils. It was formed as a result of the atmosphere of solidarity and joint Arab action that the Arab nation experienced during that period.

Representatives of the parliaments of the following Arab countries participated in the founding conference of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union held in Damascus (19-21 June 1974): Jordan – Bahrain – Tunisia – Sudan – Syria – Palestine – Kuwait – Lebanon – Egypt – Mauritania.

Al-Halbousi assumed the position, following the Speaker of the Bahraini Parliament, Ahmed bin Salman Al-Musallam, who presided over the federation from 12/12/2022 to 1/8/2023.

The President of the Union, Muhammad Rikan Al-Halbousi, issued two statements since the beginning of his assumption of office, one on Sudan and the other on the situation in the State of Libya regarding the consensus document dated January 10.
