Kay Voges wants to secure national and international attention for the Cologne drama as future artistic director. “Through its content and aesthetic orientation, Schauspiel Köln will have a unique selling point within the German-speaking theater landscape,” said the theater maker, who will head the Volkstheater Wien until 2025, on Tuesday at a joint press conference with Mayor Henriette Reker (independent).

On the one hand, local Cologne stories should be told, but at the same time the theater should be a “place for Europe, a theater that is committed to the basic values of the European Union and is looking for a progressive European narrative”. He was “overjoyed” with his appointment, said Voges.

On Monday evening, the Main Committee of the Cologne City Council approved his appointment. Born in Düsseldorf, he succeeds Stefan Bachmann, who is moving to the Burgtheater in Vienna for the 2024/25 season. For a year there is then an interim solution with in-house director Rafael Sanchez.

Voges arrives for the 2025/26 season. By then, the Cologne drama should have moved back to the renovated main building in the city center following more than a decade in transitional quarters. “This is one of the top stages in Europe that is currently being built,” said Voges, who had just visited the construction site of the post-war house.
