Vietnam Makes a Bold Move: Reaching 7th Place in Global IPv6 Adoption
Vietnam has solidified its position as a global leader in internet connectivity with a remarkable 65.5% adoption rate of IPv6, catapulting the country to 7th place worldwide. This achievement, a significant jump from late 2023, underscores Vietnam’s commitment to building a robust and future-proof internet infrastructure.
This progress is detailed in the 2024 Vietnam Internet and Internet Resources Report, released by the Vietnam Internet Network Facts center (VNNIC), which celebrated its 25th anniversary this year.
The report paints a vibrant picture of vietnam’s digital landscape, showcasing its rapid advancement from a single network in 1997 to an interconnected system boasting 1,148 autonomous networks. The groundwork for this success includes direct peering connections, multi-directional load-sharing systems, and strong linkages to key internet exchange points like the National Internet Exchange of Vietnam (VNIX).These interconnected systems guarantee reliable and resilient connectivity across the nation.
Leading the Way with IPv6 and National Domain Names
Vietnam is showcasing its commitment to future-proof technologies by embracing IPv6. As of November 2024, the country’s IPv6 adoption rate stands at an extraordinary 65.5%, which is 1.6 times higher than the global average. Vietnam ranks second in ASEAN and among the top seven globally, further solidifying its position as a frontrunner in IPv6 implementation.
“Moving to IPv6-only networks will drive technological innovation and create breakthrough value while gradually phasing out IPv4 in sync with global trends,”
stated VNNIC, demonstrating the organization’s forward-thinking approach.
Another noteworthy achievement is the growth of the national “.vn” domain name, celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2024. Over 630,000 “.vn” domain names have been registered, placing Vietnam second in ASEAN, 10th in the Asia-Pacific region, and 40th globally. This remarkable surge, a six-spot increase as the end of 2020, highlights Vietnam’s growing digital presence and national pride in its online identity.
A Robust Infrastructure Built for the Future
the core internet infrastructure in Vietnam consistently operates at an exceptional 99.99% SLA efficiency. A major contributor to this reliability is the widespread adoption of ROA/RPKI digital resource signing, with 845 out of 1,148 VNNIC IP members actively participating. This commitment to security measures has resulted in a significant 73% reduction in routing security incidents in 2024.
Furthermore, the implementation of domestic DNS ROOT systems has significantly enhanced domain name query speeds, achieving a fivefold increase in efficiency. These technological advancements demonstrate Vietnam’s dedication to building a high-performing and secure internet infrastructure.
Charting a Path towards an IPv6-Only Future
Vietnam is strategically aligning its internet infrastructure with the future by aiming for a complete transition to IPv6. VNNIC has announced a clear roadmap, projecting the following IPv6 adoption rates: 70% by 2025; 80% by 2028; 90% by 2030; and 100% by 2032, marking the complete phasing out of IPv4.
This decisive move towards IPv6 is essential for supporting the development of next-generation internet services, especially in the rapidly expanding fields of IoT, cloud computing, and 5G/6G technologies.
VNNIC is driving the adoption of the “.vn” domain name as a key component of vietnam’s digital transformation. The organization aims to achieve at least 1 million “.vn” domain registrations by the end of 2025, underscoring its commitment to fostering a thriving digital ecosystem within the country.
