Not long ago the project got me Vlimmer of the Berlin post punk and electronic performer Alexander Leonard Donat with the previous work Deserted drawn into an unreal, almost post-apocalyptic scenario. The successor exhaustion is not necessarily more optimistic, but that doesn’t make it less successful.

The eponymous portmanteau outlines the theme of the recent post punk / dark gaze work quite clearly. It’s regarding people as part of the big machine, which at some point becomes worn out and deprived of their task without an identity.

Of course, this collection of nine songs isn’t just a look forward. Nostalgics will also get their money’s worth, at least musically. Especially fans of the New Wave of the early 1980s and post punk will enjoy the production and the strongly synth-dominated sound. And also up exhaustion make it Vlimmer to generate a very own cosmos that can also score points with its German-language texts. In the HERE album teaser that can be seen Vlimmer in a mask as someone who has had his identity stolen, even burned or destroyed. This darkness presents itself on menacing songs like Fear of death a.

Atmospheric post punk with a dark note

The striking vocals emphasize these feelings, it really brings the songs to life in all their authenticity and only shows their full effect when combined with them. The melodic yet dense songs bring back memories of the early ones The Cure, where Vlimmer imprints his own sound on the whole thing through the production. Already shown with the predecessors given, what modern dark wave has to say with its own Berlin touch and can still build bridges.

In addition, is exhaustion not just music alone. Rather, it is a total work of art, an audiovisual concept. In the review of the predecessor I burned bridges John Carpenter and his ability to combine cinematic and audiovisual elements into a dystopian work of art. I see this gift here too and the musical means are comparable. So if you think you’ve heard everything in shoegaze / post punk and… Vlimmer If you don’t know him yet, I would like to give him a warm recommendation.

Conclusion
If you have a certain inclination towards threatening visions of the future, the interested listener should definitely listen to this exhaustion in particular and Vlimmer generally already approaching. The latest work is still dark, dense and rich. 8,5 / 10
