Vladimir Putin repeatedly threatens the Baltics, Georgia and the Republic of Moldova. Defense Minister Pistorius calls for the threats to be taken seriously.
Since beginning his war of aggression once morest Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin has threatened many other countries. Georgia, the Republic of Moldova – and also the Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) now advocates in an interview with “Welt” that these threats once morest other countries be taken seriously. “This is not saber rattling,” he explained in an interview with the newspaper.
Europe must be prepared for a possible threat from Russia. This is particularly true because it might well be that the USA shifts its commitment from the European to the Pacific region, said the minister. “We Europeans must increase our commitment to ensure security on our continent,” said Pistorius.
Pistorius: We have five to eight years to catch up
In order to be prepared for a possible Russian attack, the European defense industry must significantly increase its production capacity in the coming years: “We now have regarding five to eight years in which we have to catch up – both in the armed forces and in industry and in of society,” the Defense Minister continued.
It is also very clear to Pistorius that Germany should remain part of the nuclear sharing within NATO. That is why they have just decided to order the Lightning II variant of the F-35 fighter jets from the USA. The F-35 jets have the capability to carry U.S. nuclear weapons and use them in an emergency. To this day, US nuclear weapons are stationed in Germany.
