MOSCOW, Russia.—This Thursday, the president of russia, Vladimir Putinadmitted that all BRICS countriesparticularly China and Brazil, want the war in Ukraine ends as soon as possible and, preferably, peaceful way.
“Everyone is focused on ending the conflict (in Ukraine) as soon as possible and preferably peacefully,” he said at a press conference at the end of the BRICS Group Summit in the Russian city of Kazan.
The head of the Kremlin expressed his gratitude to all partners for paying attention to the Ukrainian conflict and “looking for a way to resolve it.”
During the news conference, Putin again accused the United States of supporting a coup in Ukraine in 2014, which led to the current escalation, he said.
Regarding the current situation on the front, he assured that the Russian army “acts firmly in all directions.”
“(The troops) are advancing in all sectors of the line of contact,” he assured.
In particular, the Russian leader referred to the situation in the Russian Kursk region, where Ukrainian troops broke in on August 6.
“(The Russian military) is actively working on the Kursk front. Some units of the Ukrainian army, including in the Kursk region, are blocked and surrounded. “There are approximately 2,000 troops,” he assured.
Commenting on the possibility of negotiations with Ukraine, he insisted that it is kyiv that refuses to dialogue with Moscow.
“The ball is in their court,” he said.
At the same time, he emphasized that Russia is willing to consider any peace agreement that takes into account “the reality on the ground” and ruled out any other option.
During the BRICS summit, the leaders of China, India and Brazil pleaded with Putin about the need for a prompt de-escalation in Ukraine for the prompt start of peace negotiations.

**Interview with Dr. Elena Smirnova, Political Analyst at the Eurasian Institute**
**Interviewer:** Thank you for joining us today, Dr. Smirnova. We’ve just seen Vladimir Putin’s statements at the BRICS summit regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. What do you make of his remarks that the BRICS members want an end to the war, preferably through peaceful means?
**Dr. Smirnova:** Thank you for having me. Putin’s acknowledgment of the desire among BRICS nations, particularly China and Brazil, for a swift and peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict is quite significant. It signals that these countries are not just passive observers but actively seeking to mediate and influence outcomes. This could reshape the dynamics of international diplomacy surrounding the war.
**Interviewer:** It’s interesting that he brought up gratitude towards his partners for their efforts in seeking a resolution. What do you think this indicates about Russia’s current position?
**Dr. Smirnova:** Putin’s comments suggest a degree of dependency on these non-Western allies. By highlighting their willingness to engage in dialogue about Ukraine, Russia is essentially signaling that it recognizes the need for a broader coalition to navigate the international backlash it faces, particularly from the West. It may also be an attempt to strengthen ties within BRICS as a counterbalance to Western influence.
**Interviewer:** At the same time, he continues to blame the U.S. for the ongoing conflict. How does this rhetoric play into the situation?
**Dr. Smirnova:** Putin’s narrative of blaming the U.S. for the 2014 coup reinforces Russia’s strategy of portraying itself as a victim of foreign intervention. This approach rallies domestic support and justifies military actions by framing them as necessary defensive measures against Western aggression. However, it also risks further isolating Russia from potential dialogue with Western nations that might be key to a peaceful resolution.
**Interviewer:** You mentioned the potential for a reshaped international diplomacy landscape. How might the BRICS nations leverage their influence to mediate in Ukraine?
**Dr. Smirnova:** The BRICS nations, by bringing their distinct perspectives and interests to the table, could offer alternative narratives and solutions that appeal to both sides of the conflict. Their collective economic and political weight may enable them to facilitate discussions that Western countries have been unable to achieve. However, it will be important for these nations to find common ground among themselves, as their interests in the conflict can differ greatly.
**Interviewer:** Thank you for your insights, Dr. Smirnova. It seems that the BRICS summit has opened avenues for a complex interplay of alliances moving forward.
**Dr. Smirnova:** Absolutely. The situation remains fluid, and how these countries proceed will be crucial in determining the future course of the conflict as well as international relations as a whole. Thank you for having me.
