SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin and the leader of North Korea began their meeting at the Vostochny Cosmodrome on Wednesday, the Russian state news agency Tass reported.

The talks, in which their respective delegations participated, began shortly following Putin and Kim visited part of the center’s facilities, including two launch pads.

The two leaders met at a remote cosmodrome in Siberia for a summit that demonstrates that their interests are aligning in the face of their independent, and increasingly attempted, confrontations with the United States.

Putin and Kim began the meeting with a visit to the Soyuz-2 spacecraft launch facility, where the North Korean leader peppered a Russian space official with questions regarding the rockets.

The summit came hours following Pyongyang fired two ballistic missiles into the sea, expanding weapons tests that began in early 2022, while Kim takes advantage of the distraction caused by Putin’s war in Ukraine to accelerate his weapons development.
