Vlaams Belang Chairman Assaulted by Police During Brussels Protest: The Truth Revealed

Twenty members of Vlaams Belang came to demonstrate in Brussels on Tuesday morning. According to a video shared by the far-right party on social media, their chairman, Tom Van Grieken, was punched in the face by a police officer.

What happened ? The VB reported in a statement that their group was attacked by law enforcement, preventing some MPs from joining the protest. The police say that the presence of Vlaams Belang caused unrest among the demonstrators. “To maintain calm and avoid further confrontations, our police command has decided to separate this group,” reacted Ilse Van de Keere, spokesperson for the Brussels police. “It was accompanied by unruly behavior, followed by pushing. The exact facts are still under internal investigation,” she added.

The video relayed by the VB, edited, shows only part of the altercation. “Since when is a demonstration in favor of health care a problem in Belgium? Is this what the PS mayor of Brussels Close means by democracy?”, the Flemish party is indignant.

Tom Van Grieken also insulted Philippe Close with our colleagues from HLN: “He called the police to move us by using force. I got punched in the face […]. This is how the PS mayor gives his orders to the police. Personally, I don’t blame them, because they ensure our safety every day. Today, they allow themselves to be pushed around by the system for a French-speaking PS mayor. That bothers me”
