Vivienne Westwood’s personal collection fetches over half a million euros at auction

Items from the personal collection of the late British designer Vivienne Westwood fetched more than £465,000 (almost 551,000 euros) at a charity auction on Tuesday at Christie’s.

The designs by iconoclast Westwood, who was one of the great inspirations of the punk aesthetic, were sold in a live auction in London, although some of them will be auctioned online, Christie’s said in a statement.

All of the auction items were sold, with the proceeds going to the non-governmental organization (NGO) that Westwood founded, the Vivienne Foundation, as well as others such as Amnesty International, Doctors Without Borders and Greenpeace.

In total, 95 lots representing her career and life were presented at an auction that reviewed four decades of the designer’s work.

The sale also happened to take place on the same day that cyber-activist Julian Assange was released from prison in the United Kingdom after reaching an agreement with the US justice system, one of the cases in which Westwood had been most heavily involved in the last years of his life.

Andreas Kronthaler, Westwood’s husband and creative director, who died on December 29, 2022, selected the objects.

The auction was led by a limited edition set of ten playing cards, which sold for £37,000 (almost €45,000) at the start of bidding.

Also notable was the sale of her famous “Cinderella dress”, whose airy skirt Westwood herself repaired after it had worn out from use and for which 25 thousand pounds (30 thousand euros) were paid, despite its estimated value having been set between 2 thousand and 3 thousand pounds.
