2023-07-10 19:33:40

The Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) promotes a decalogue to take care of the emotional well-being of the population, as part of the sectoral campaign Vive SALUDABLEMENTE. The objective of this campaign is to inform the population about the main actions and tools in mental health care and addiction prevention.

Alejandra Díaz Moguel, psychologist attached to the Health Project Management Area, detailed the recommendations that make up the decalogue:

Learn to recognize and express our emotions in a healthy way, without ignoring them.

Recognize that emotions such as sadness or fear are natural and fulfill a certain function; however, if we cannot control them and they prevent us from carrying out daily activities, we must seek professional help.

Take small breaks during daily activities to perform relaxation exercises and activate the body.

Maintain a support network through family and friends.

Avoid worrying about things that have not yet happened, and focus on those that we can work on in the present moment.

Carry out activities in our free time that we like and enjoy, such as reading, painting or playing with a pet.

Do 30 minutes of exercise a day, choosing the activity that we like the most: like playing soccer, doing yoga, walking, running, etc.

Maintain a balanced diet, avoiding eating in excess or under what is recommended.

Try to sleep eight hours a day, without interruptions, to rest your body and mind.

Do not self-medicate, or consume substances or remedies without a prescription.

In addition, to promote prevention and self-care in mental health, the “five minutes of gratitude” is promoted among the population.

It consists of taking a break of approximately five minutes during times of stress to do breathing exercises, stretching, have a coffee, meditate, write to a friend, go for a walk or listen to relaxing music, whether at home, work or school. .

Díaz Moguel highlighted that, as part of the sectoral campaign launched on April 19 of this year, the IMSS informs its beneficiaries about the importance of mental health, self-care strategies and measures to reduce stigma and discrimination.

He invited the beneficiaries to go to the corresponding Family Medicine Unit (UMF) to receive care from family medical personnel, who are trained to provide adequate care or refer to a specialist in Psychology or Psychiatry, if necessary. necessary.

“Our goal in this campaign is prevention, in order to prevent mental health situations from getting worse,” he said.

This initiative is carried out in collaboration with the National Commission on Mental Health and Addictions (CONASAMA), the Institute for Security and Social Services for State Workers (ISSSTE) and the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS), which joined forces to implement various actions focused on promoting mental health care.
