Vitamin K effective against type 2 diabetes

A Canadian study reveals that consuming vitamin K would help our pancreas to produce insulin, limiting the risk of diabetes.

Currently there is no no treatment for type 2 diabetes. In fact, researchers focus on the development of the latter but also on preventive elements. Thus, the researchers found that walking following eating or consuming tea might limit the risks.

But our diet, specifically the vitamins in what we eat, might have a major influence. In any case, this is what researchers from the University of Montreal say. Studying the benefits of vitamin K on the body, they brought to light an astonishing function of the latter.

Their findings and the full study on the subject have been published in the journal Cell Reports.

A hitherto unknown action on the pancreas and the insulin produced by our body

Originally, researchers were trying to understand the effects of vitamin K on our body. To this end, they notably studied the enzymes involved in gamma-carboxylation. If this name seems complex, it actually designates the enzymatic reactions produced thanks to vitamin K.

They then noticed that these enzymes were very present in our pancreas. Then they linked the level of vitamin K and the development of type 2 diabetes. This is where they found that a lack of vitamin K directly impacted the beta cells present in this organ.

If not enough of the vitamin gets to them, gamma-carboxylation is reduced or stopped. These cells are also responsible for the production of insulin in our body. Fact, lack of vitamin K causes a chain reaction that reduces insulin production and increases the risk of type 2 diabetes.

In which foods can you find vitamin K?

In order to guarantee the proper functioning of the beta cells of the pancreas, it is therefore recommended to consume enough vitamin K. However, this has the advantage of being present in large quantities in many fruits and vegetables.

Among the products to favor, parsley, kiwi, lettuce, avocado or spinach are good sources of vitamins. According to the figures communicated by the National Health Security Agency, it would be necessary ingest 79 µg daily. However, half a cup of some of these foods provides 400 mcg.

Adapting your diet and consuming fresh products rich in vitamin K is therefore a first step in the fight once morest diabetes.
