In a recent research work by University of Surrey and the University and Brighton were significant differences between both types of Vitamin D established. These make the influence of vitamin D2 seem rather questionable, whereas Vitamin D3 to strengthen the immune system contributes.

Vitamin D3 is primarily formed naturally in the skin from exposure to sunlight or artificial ultraviolet UVB light, and people often have inadequate vitamin D3 levels when living in places where winter sun exposure is very limited.

Vitamin D3 instead of vitamin D2

The study found differences in the effect of vitamin D2 and vitamin D3 on gene activity, which now have to be investigated further in larger studies, explains study author Professor Susan Lanham-New.

The expert adds, however, the current study shows that vitamin D3 should be the preferred form for fortified foods and dietary supplements. (as)
