(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Seonggan Han = A study found that vitamin D supplementation was effective in relieving depression.
This fact was revealed as a result of a comprehensive analysis of data from 41 clinical trials (randomized control group) related to vitamin D-depression published in the world by a research team led by Professor Tuomas Mikola at the Institute of Clinical Medicine at Eastern University of Finland. News Medical Life Science reported on the 15th.
In all clinical trials, the group taking the vitamin D supplement showed less depression than the control group, the researchers found.
The doses of vitamin D supplements taken vary greatly, but the 50-100 µg (microgram) intake was the most common. 50~100µg corresponds to 2000~4000IU (international unit).
Vitamin D is believed to regulate the functions of the central nervous system. Disturbances in the central nervous system are associated with depression.
However, the researchers acknowledged that the results of this trial lack the certainty of the evidence due to the risk of population heterogeneity and bias among participants.
Therefore, the research team emphasized that more evidence from further studies is needed.
The results of this study were published in the latest issue of Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition, an American journal of food and nutrition.
