A new study shows that vitamin D deficiency is associated with severe progression of Corona 19, risk of death.

According to Yonhap, the research team of Dr. Amiel Dror, an otolaryngologist at the University of Bar-Ilan in Israel and the Galilee Medical Center(GMC), analyzed the medical records of 1176 patients with PCR-positive corona 19 who were admitted to the Galilee Medical Center between April 2020 and February 2021, the science news site EurekAlert of the American Association for the Promotion of Science(AAAS)reported on the 5th.

The researchers analyzed 253 people with records of measuring blood vitamin D levels between two weeks and two years before they were infected with Corona 19, to see if there was a link between vitamin D blood levels and Corona 19 prognosis.

Of these, 52% of vitamin D blood levels were below 20 ng/ ml corresponding to ‘deficiency’, 14% were in the ‘insufficient’ range 20~29 ng/ ml, 17% were in the ‘sufficient’ level 30~39 ng/ ml, and 16% were ‘high’ 40 ng/ ml or more.

The analysis showed that patients with vitamin D blood levels below 20ng/ ml before Corona 19 infection had a 14 times higher risk of severe to severe exacerbation of symptoms than patients with 40ng/mL or more, the researchers said.

They also had a mortality rate of 25.6%, more than 10 times higher than 2.3% of patients with vitamin D levels of 40ng/ ml or more.

This suggests that vitamin D deficiency in patients with Corona 19 may foreshadow the prognosis of Corona 19, the researchers explained.

The researchers added that the findings may help solve the mystery, as it is still unclear why some of the Corona 19 patients have worsened their symptoms with gastritis.

The results of this study were published in the online scientific journal PLoS ONE.
