Visually impaired people: solutions for autonomy

Whether Canadian, Chinese, Czech or French, manufacturers of electronic devices are doubling their ingenuity to facilitate and improve the daily lives of the visually impaired and blind.

When we are born with a visual impairment or lose our sight during life, it then becomes difficult to adapt independently to the world of able-bodied people in the actions of daily life such as reading, cultivating oneself. , have fun or even carry out administrative procedures. Fortunately, there are structures that provide keys to compensate for the disability, at least partially, and provide greater autonomy. This is the case of the Valentin Haüy Association (AVH) whose departmental committee has just opened its doors. The opportunity for the volunteers of the AVH65 committee to detail their missions – namely to inform, advise and guide people with visual disabilities – while presenting the culture and leisure center. But during this open day the emphasis was placed on the presentation of materials adapted to the visually impaired.

Technological tools which aroused the interest of two department heads of the Departmental House for Disabled People and of course several users or future beneficiaries. It must be said that there is no shortage of existing devices and technological developments deployed by manufacturers. A specialist in low vision, Tarbes optician Christophe Haïra provided proof. Telemagnifiers, magnifying glasses, light filters, aid systems for distance and especially near vision: “The primary complaints are reading the newspaper and mail. The equipment adapts to the people.”

Ingenuity and intelligence Alphonse Caetano from the Toulouse agency Accessolutions has the same perspective. Electronic lamp, vocalized telephones, portable reading machine: “A lot of progress has been made, there is a big step forward with the power and miniaturization of electronic components”.

Reading letters, magazines and newspapers has never been so quick and easy with comfort and space saving.

A place in the technological field that artificial intelligence is increasingly taking over. “It accelerates the process of equipment development, tests by manufacturers are underway” notes Carole Foucart, employee at the AVH head office in Paris.

“Microsoft is working with Valentin Haüy’s research center to be able to read handwritten characters.” And to conclude on a note of optimism. “It will happen one day. Tomorrow, people with visual disabilities will be better integrated into society with artificial intelligence.” Soon a reality?
