Mr. Staikouras started the contacts early in the morning with a first visit to the town hall of Heraklion. In the meeting he had with the mayor Alexis Kalokairinos, they discussed the BOAK, as well as the utilization of the area occupied by the Heraklion airport “N.Kazantzakis”, when the work on the new international airport in Kasteli is completed.
Mr. Staikouras referred to the excellent – as he described it – cooperation with the mayor of Heraklion, saying about BOAK that what was at the center was “the quick, valid but also with additional interventions (which the municipal authority wants) implementation of the project” , noting that this is an element that will be evaluated, “after the procedures for contracting the remaining section and the implementation of projects in the remaining sections proceed in a short time”.
Regarding the question of the utilization of the property, after the transfer of Heraklion airport to Kasteli, Christos Staikouras pointed out that it is a very important asset for the city, clarifying that it is important to resolve the ownership status. “There are different approaches but a common convergence in terms of the final result, to be used for the benefit of the local community”, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport told local media, concluding that specific timetables will be set in a meeting that will take place in the afternoon but and data, both from the TAIPED, which has undertaken the maturation of the project on behalf of the Greek state, and from the municipal authority.
For his part, the mayor of Heraklion noted that the discussions on the exploitation of the property “are not taking place in any spirit of litigation” and that the issue is convergence. In fact, Mr. Kalokairinos expressed his satisfaction with the willingness to move forward with solutions quickly, because as he noted “the truth is that the airport will be removed in a short time horizon and this area risks remaining idle, with very negative consequences both for the city and for the wider region”.
Autopsy of Staikoura at the construction site of BOAK
At this time, Mr. Staikouras is conducting an autopsy at a construction site of the Northern Road Axis of Crete in Hersonissos. Immediately after, he will be at another construction site of BOAK in Neapoli, while before the meeting at Heraklion airport “Nikos Kazantzakis” he will visit the construction site of the new international airport in Kasteli.
