“Visions du Réel: Highlights of the 54th Edition and Award-Winning Swiss Films”

This extraordinary project will consist of seven parts once completed: two of them were presented during this 54th edition of Visions du Réel. More than 20 years ago in 2002, Peter Mettler had already been awarded the Grand Prix with “Gambling, Gods and LSD”, a documentary on the search for ecstasy.

In “While the Green Grass Grows”, the director films his daily life, in a kind of diary or visual meditation. The events recounted are relatively recent: the death of his mother in 2019, accompanied by images of nature and the Appenzell mountains. The pandemic period then brings him back to Canada where he tries to enjoy his father’s last moments.

This is the second year in a row that a Swiss film has won the Grand Prix de Vision du Réel. Last year, it was “L’Îlot” by Lausanne’s Tizian Büchi, which was released in May in French-speaking and German-speaking cinemas.

The Swiss competition won “Chagrin Valley”, a first film by Zurich’s Nathalie Berger. The viewer is immersed in an artificial village, created in a warehouse in the suburbs of Cleveland, where residents of a retirement home with dementia live.

The special jury prize goes to “The Wonder Way” by Emmanuelle Antille. From her grandmother’s garden, the Lausanne visual artist turned filmmaker takes the viewer on a journey through unusual territories to the four corners of the planet and space.

The special mention goes to “La Maison”, the first film by another Lausanne resident, Sophie Ballmer. This is the banal story of a house undergoing renovation, inherited in the Vallée de Joux. Sophie Ballmer sees in this renovation the opportunity to try her hand at documentary and autofiction.

World Premiere Broadcast

Among the other prizes awarded by Visions du Réel, we can also mention “Pure Unknown”, a Swiss co-production (with Italy and Sweden), directed by Valentina Cicogna and Mattia Colombo, which received the Interreligious Prize.

Every night, unnamed bodies land in Dr. Cristina Cattaneo’s autopsy room. She calls them the “pure strangers”. They are homeless people, prostitutes, runaway teenagers. Lately, it has been mainly migrants, rejected by the Mediterranean Sea on the Italian coasts. The doctor is concerned regarding their right to dignity.

All the winning films had world premieres. The Public Prize will still be awarded on Saturday while this 54th edition will end on Sunday with the screening in Nyon of the various award-winning films.
