The testing labs are pretty deserted right now. Few developers respond to the call launched by Apple.
Apple recently invited developers to labs to test its mixed reality headset, but the labs aren’t crowded enough. Mark Gurman tells us in a tweet that this is due to a number of factors. Including the fact that Apple does not offer sessions / labs anywhere in the United States and that it does not reimburse travel expenses.
Additionally, Apple has strict rules for development kits, including limiting the headset to a single developer and keeping it in a private, secure workspace. Concretely, testing the Apple Vision Pro is an obstacle course.
A lack of enthusiasm that challenges
This lack of developer interest is concerning for Apple, as having a wide range of apps available for its mixed reality headset is essential for it to be a success. If Apple doesn’t do more to attract developers, it may end up with a headset that won’t be popular enough.
To address concerns, Apple said it will open development labs in other cities in the future, but it’s unclear when that will happen. In the meantime, developers who want to test the Vision Pro will have to pay out of their own pocket.
This lack of investment from Apple might harm the development of mixed reality. Indeed, developers may be reluctant to invest in technology that is not accessible.
