A rip in the pants covered by a colorful patch. Torn socks that have been more or less artfully darned. This is what most people think of as repaired clothing. In their own “Visible Mending” workshops, two young women from Vienna show that repairing clothing can even upgrade and beautify it. Serafina Spatt and Alina Saavedra Santis want to give old items of clothing a new chance and save them from being thrown away.
“Visible mending”, i.e. the deliberately visible repairing of clothing, in which holes, tears or stains are conspicuously covered up, has already arrived as a trend in the fashion world. Textile artists and designers have raised artistic darning, mending or embroidery to an art form. There are no limits to the imagination: colorful patterns, colors and different techniques. The repaired area thus not only becomes a fashion statement itself, but also sets a conscious signal for more sustainability.
