[메디컬투데이=조민규 기자] Research has shown that visceral fat may increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

The research results have not yet been published in a journal.

Visceral fat refers to the fat that exists around the internal organs in the abdominal cavity and is known to be closely related to metabolic diseases such as hyperlipidemia and increased insulin resistance. Excessive consumption of fast food, meat, and carbohydrates is known to be the cause of visceral fat. In particular, repeated consumption of foods high in sugar is known to increase insulin concentration in the body, accelerating the conversion and accumulation of remaining nutrients into fat.

To reduce visceral fat, it is necessary to improve eating habits, such as aerobic exercise at least three times a week, eating regularly, and chewing sufficiently.

The researchers analyzed the relationship between amyloid and tau proteins, which are known to interfere with signaling between brain cells, and high body mass index (BMI), obesity, and insulin resistance.

The study found that higher levels of visceral fat influenced the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease pathology. Previous studies have shown that as visceral fat levels rise, brain inflammation also increases.

The study found that the relationship between visceral fat and Alzheimer’s disease was stronger in men than in women. The researchers noted that the higher the level of visceral fat, the higher the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, and that aerobic exercise and diet control are necessary to reduce visceral fat.
