Virtual game stores for Wii U and 3DS will close in 2023

Don’t delay too long if you want to buy games for your Wii U or 3DS consoles. Nintendo’s virtual stores for these devices will close in March 2023, the Japanese giant announced on Tuesday.

It will no longer be possible to add funds to your accounts on these online stores from May 2022.

Good news for people who would like to redownload games they have already purchased: they will be able to do so beyond March 2023, Nintendo said in a press release. Updates will continue to be offered as well.

Several games or versions of classic games that were only available on these online stores will therefore cease to be available, reports the website specializing in video games IGN.

The 3DS and Wii U consoles were released in 2011 and 2012 respectively. The former enjoyed immense popularity and versions of it were produced until 2020, while the latter was a commercial failure.
