Many children in the region will have a snow day off Tuesday, creating a four-day weekend following Monday’s closures for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Several Virginia school districts announced that schools will be closed as the most significant snowfall is expected in about two years. The Weather Authority issued a Weather Alert.
Closed school systems are:
- Alexandria City Public Schools
- Arlington Public School
- Culpeper County Public Schools
- Fairfax County Public Schools
- Falls Church City Public Schools
- Fauquier County Public Schools
- Frederick County Public Schools
- Loudoun County Public Schools
- Manassas City Public Schools
- Page County Public Schools
- Prince William County Public Schools
- Orange County Public Schools
- Shenandoah County Public Schools
- Warren County Public Schools
- Winchester City Public Schools to open on a 2-hour delay
SNOW TOTALS AND WHAT TO EXPECT FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS
Snow moved from the south to the north Monday night and became widespread overnight. Snowfall is expected to taper off Tuesday after noon.
Similarly, the greatest accumulation of winter precipitation is forecast to occur from 7 p.m. Monday through 9 a.m. Tuesday.
Total accumulation for Tuesday should be around 2 to 3 inches, but “some isolated spots could get a little more… The second half of the day looks to be quiet,” Storm Team4 meteorologist Jessica Faith said.
The Weather Authority predicts that the worst of the impacts on Tuesday will be:
- Icy roads in the morning
- Poor visibility, especially before dawn when snow is still falling
- Strong winds with gusts around 20 mph
- Dangerous cold, with wind chills of up to 20 degrees throughout the day.
Temperatures will be well below average for the next week, according to Martínez.
