Beijing, Apr 24 (EFE).- The governor of Virginia (USA), Glenn Youngkin, arrived today in Taiwan, where he announced the upcoming opening on the island of a commercial office for his state, Taiwanese media reported today.

Youngkin advanced during a meeting with the Taiwanese president, Tsai Ing-wen, who signed an executive order this Monday that authorizes the establishment of said office, which will be added to those that Virginia already has in Germany, South Korea and Japan, collects the official agency CNA.

The office will represent “the enduring commitment to promote collaboration and increase ties with Taiwan,” the US politician told Tsai, who highlighted Virginia’s good economic and trade relations with Taiwan.

According to data cited by the governor, exports of products from that state to Taiwan have increased by 27% compared to 2020, while Virginia imports more than a billion dollars in goods from the island.

Youngkin’s arrival in Taipei, where he will remain until Tuesday, is part of a commercial tour that will also take the Republican governor to Japan and South Korea.

For her part, the Taiwanese president applauded the initiative of the state of Virginia and stressed that last year the island was its fifth supplier of imports in Asia, and its fourth export market.

The visit of the American politician takes place amid growing tensions between China and the United States on account of Taiwan and the recent visit of Tsai to the United States, where he met in Los Angeles with the speaker of the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy , sparking outrage from Beijing.

The island is one of the biggest sources of conflict between China and the United States, mainly because Washington is Taiwan’s main arms supplier and would be its greatest military ally in the event of a war with the Asian giant.

China claims sovereignty over Taiwan, which it views as a rogue province since Kuomintang nationalists withdrew there in 1949 following losing the civil war to the communist army. EFE
