HARRISONBURG, Va. – The No. 5 Virginia field hockey team (11-5) closed out the regular season with a 3-2 victory at James Madison (3-12) on Tuesday (Oct. 24) in Harrisonburg, Va.
Sophomore midfielder Daniela Mendez-Trendler scored the game-winning goal with 4:19 remaining in regulation. Junior striker Taryn Tkachuk scored a goal and had an assist.
HOW IT HAPPENED
James Madison took an early lead with Morgan Merritt scoring on a penalty corner 8:44 into the game. Tkachuk tied the game when she found a loose ball in front of the net and bounced it over the goalkeeper and into the cage with 6:26 remaining in the first half.
Laura Janssen broke the 1-1 tie 2:10 into the second half, knocking in a pass from Tkachuk. The Dukes tied the game 28 seconds into the fourth quarter when Maddy Shale found the wide-open far side of the net and knocked in a shot.
Mendez-Trendler put the Cavaliers back in the lead, knocking in a long pass from across the circle from Emily Field with 4:19 remaining in the game.
The Dukes pulled their goalkeeper with just under two minutes to play but might not get off a shot as the UVA defense held on for the victory.

The bracket for the tournament will be announced on Friday evening following the conclusion of the Duke/UNC game which begins at 6 p.m.
